An old saying goes: the first person who compared a young girl to a flower was a genius, the next who did so was a fool.
From this, I have come to understand that art, especially visual art, must be about being the originator, much like the genius who first likened a young girl to a flower.
A successful piece of visual art must be creative and original, not merely an imitation or repetition of others’ or predecessors’ work.
Creativity refers to the artist’s intuitive perception of social and natural phenomena, elevated through rational judgment to a personal enlightenment and insights, which are then expressed through the brush. The essence of what is depicted embodies the artist’s deepest emotions and attitudes, whether affirmation or critique. Such visual expressions aim to move the viewer’s heart, awaken their spirit, invigorate their vigor, and guide them towards a happier horizon, leaving hardships behind.
Imitation and repetition, on the other hand, lack personal subjective creativity; they merely mimic the works of the ancients or predecessors without a personal stance and soul as the foundation of the visual works. Although such works may achieve certain levels of proficiency in brushwork, color, and technique, they remain merely craftsmanship due to their lack of creativity, and cannot truly be called art.
Trekking through majestic rivers and rugged mountains, each encounter is thrilling because every facet of nature is uniquely splendid. Observing various art and history museums, if there lacks individual masterpieces, even hundreds of artworks appear as mundane as plain paper, unable to spark interest or provoke thought in viewers, who pass by quickly and forget what they saw. However, if an artwork displays unique personality, conveys profound inner monologues and overwhelming emotions, it will inevitably resonate deeply, making viewers pause and reflect, inspire thoughts, stir emotions, or motivate action. Such works are truly successful and can rightfully be called art.
The allure of art and the charm of captivating artworks lie in the power of the piece itself. A still artwork can evoke a call as grand as mighty waves, appearing to observers like flames or endless oceans, unceasing and powerful. It compels one to reflect on life, gain strength, strive for happiness, and cherish the magnificent landscapes. This embodies the profound meaning of “charm” in art.
