His style is unique with a straightforward and powerful brushwork, which is acclaimed as the “essay” within the painting. Recently, the amateur painter Cheung Chi Wai displayed over two hundred of his practice works from the past three years at the Baiyun International Convention Center, marking the first public debut of his works. Art critic and calligrapher Liu Youju believes that Cheung’s paintings emit a profound outcry against the hardships of life, a responsibility that every literary and artistic creator should bear.

He is known as the “Civic Painter.”

Cheung Chi Wai’s works were exhibited last Thursday at the Baiyun International Convention Center. The collection primarily features watercolors and oil paintings, encapsulating popular issues such as the Chongqing nail houses, Shanxi coal mines, the fragile Shanghai buildings, and the fishing incident. With his intense realism and profound brushwork, Cheung has emerged as a distinctive new talent in Guangzhou’s art scene, even earning the title “Civic Painter.”

Cheung Chi Wai’s paintings emphasize the inner worlds of his characters. In an oil painting depicting a holdout householder, several weary figures are shown guarding their home, with the rumble of a bulldozer in the background. Cheung mentioned that he was deeply moved by the tragic yet defiant stance of a citizen, Tang Fuzhen, protecting her home. He pondered how to best pay tribute to her through his art, ultimately creating this particular piece.

In this exhibition, Cheung Chi Wai also displayed nearly a hundred portraits, including those of migrant workers, earthquake victims, coal miners, cooks, virtuous women, and officials, representing various social figures. Liu Youju commented, “Each of his paintings is like an arrow, a dagger, deeply exposing the ugliness and diversity of life.”

Expressing one’s thoughts through painting.

It is known that Cheung Chi Wai has maintained the habit of reading newspapers daily. Cheung states that he started learning to paint only after turning fifty, and it has been less than four years since he began. “Although I wish to learn the basic techniques, mastering colors and lines, expressing my values and thoughts through painting is what I most look forward to,” Cheung admits. He also confesses that he does not seek fame or fortune through his art, believing that those who attempt to achieve overnight success through painting are bound to be disappointed.

Encouraged and supported by his friends, Cheung Chi Wai has decided to publish a collection of his paintings and organize an exhibition. Art critic Zhang Zhanxin believes, “Although Cheung Chi Wai has not undergone professional training, his strokes are incredibly free, and he expresses his thoughts with abandon, not only daring to challenge the norm but also exhibiting a broad-minded approach.” According to Zhang Zhanxin, Cheung’s works focus on people’s livelihoods and possess a sharpness of perspective that is extremely rare in today’s art scene.

["post-2429","media-pr","type-media-pr","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
